Day camp’s use of Public Works building put on hold after insurance, safety concerns

Camp director Vicki Groom told the council the Bristow Day Camp has operated for 51 years and has long used the Public Works building for short morning drop-offs and occasional crafts. "the camp has been in Bristow for 51 years and that they have used that building for many years," she said, and warned that without access the camp could be forced to shut down.
Mayor Kris Wyatt told the council an insurance representative said there was no coverage for use of the building for day camp and that "there were not enough emergency exits for that amount of people." Council members raised concerns about children being in an industrial space and asked staff to consult the insurance representative and explore alternatives; the council voted to table consideration of the camp's use of city property to the Jan. 5, 2026 meeting.
