After union plea, Cicero SD 99 board votes to terminate employee Claudia Alves

The Cicero School District 99 Board of Education on June 10 voted to approve the termination of employee Claudia Alves after SEIU Local 73 representatives spoke on her behalf during public comment.
Adriana Alvarez, hearing officer for SEIU Local 73, addressed the board saying the union believed the district had not provided sufficient equipment or effective help to the employee and that termination "would be excessive and detrimental for Ms. Alves," urging the board to consider that context. Alvarez requested that the board review all the facts before making a decision.
Claudia Alves spoke through interpretation and described herself as "a woman, mother and an aunt," asking the board to review the discipline and the circumstances before proceeding. After executive session deliberations, Member Moreno moved and Member Barrera seconded the motion to terminate Claudia Alves; roll call showed President Tomschin, Vice-President Dominick, Secretary Manouzi, Members Couch, Moreno and Barrera voting yea and Member Terracino absent. The motion carried.
