The Dickinson County Commission authorized county staff to spend up to $75,000 to acquire a used semi for the Public Works department after staff reported a county semi has a major failure and is no longer serviceable in time for the fall rock-delivery season.
Public Works and fleet staff described the truck's condition and market availability of used semis (examples of 2019'20 models in the $50,000'$65,000 range with 300,000'400,000 miles). Fleet staff also discussed repair options for the in-service truck (engine and transmission rebuild estimates discussed in the meeting) and said keeping a rebuilt unit as a loaner could be cost-effective in the short term. As a meeting participant summarized the operational need: "we are entering a period where we need to start delivering rock, and we have a semi down."
Commissioners approved the authorization by voice vote and directed staff to proceed with procurement within the $75,000 limit, while continuing to evaluate whether an in-house rebuild of the existing truck would be economical as a backup strategy.
