Fenton board approves 2026-27 health insurance renewal amid double‑digit rate increases

The Fenton CHSD 100 Board approved the district’s health insurance premium renewals for the 2026‑27 school year following a presentation by Assistant Superintendent Jose Jaramillo.
"The PPO renewal rate increased by 14.2%, compared to the cooperative average of 16.2%, while the HMO renewal rate increased by 15.4% compared to the cooperative average of 16.4%." Jaramillo told trustees, noting the district’s increases were below the cooperative averages cited by the Educational Benefit Cooperative (EBC).
Jaramillo said the district evaluated other cooperative options and determined remaining with the EBC continued to offer the best overall rates; dental premiums rose 6.4%. Board members asked whether being in a larger cooperative helped stabilize costs; administration confirmed participation helps spread market risk.
When asked how increases would be split, administration said employee contributions vary by plan type and coverage level (individual vs. family) with splits ranging roughly from 90/10 to 80–85/15 employer/employee depending on the selected plan. Any future changes to coverage or plan design would require negotiation through collective bargaining.
The motion to approve renewal rates passed on a roll call vote during the April 22 meeting.
