PCHS reports 402 students with IEPs and expands support programs
Summary
Special Education staff reported 65 departmental staff, 402 students with IEPs, multiple counseling and speech groups, related services through TMCSEA, and distinct programs including Emotional Disability (36 students) and Lifeskills (37 students).
Special Education and 504 coordinators Kristen Walraven and Tara Saurs, joined by Special Education Department Chair and School Social Worker Teri Walker, presented the department’s program scale and services at the April 27 board meeting.
The presentation listed staffing and service numbers: “65 staff members in the Special Education Department,” “402 students have an IEP,” 14 weekly counseling groups for social and emotional regulation, four weekly speech groups covering 49 speech IEPs, and additional related services coordinated with TMCSEA including physical therapy and occupational therapy. The board also heard that the Emotional Disability (ED) program serves 36 students across five classes, and the Lifeskills program serves 37 students across five classes.
Administrators emphasized practical supports and community partnerships: Work Seminar students operate the Dragon’s Brew coffee cart serving about 90 staff per day, and 75 area partners support 83 students in the Dragon Works program. The presentation included a list of special education elective and course options and underscored ongoing efforts to coordinate related services and wraparound supports.
Board members were given the program data for oversight and planning for 2026–27 services.
