Board leadership told the Palos Heights School District 128 meeting on March 18 that rising enrollment is creating budget pressure. Dr. Facko and Dr. Smit presented a Finance Focus Group update showing an approximate 21% enrollment increase over five years and about a 29% increase over ten years; the minutes state District 128 is classified as a Tier 4 district and receives little to no additional state funding despite that growth.
Presenters warned that as enrollment-related costs rise, the district will need to close the gap locally through increased property taxes or budget reductions if the state funding model remains unchanged. The board recorded the projection as contributing to a projected budget deficit and said potential strategies will continue to be reviewed.
