The Special Finance Committee of the Palos Heights School District 128 met Jan. 7, 2026, at Independence Junior High to review long-range financial planning as the district grapples with rapid enrollment growth.
Committee members and staff discussed a presentation showing the district's shift "from a $14 mitlion budget with substantial reserves to current challenges driven by a 28% enrollment increase and insufficient state funding that provides only 75% of inflation annually." The presentation framed two financial plans with taxpayer-impact scenarios and recommended engaging the community through focus groups.
The committee agreed to begin with a smaller initial focus group before expanding outreach. Personal invitations to the first group will be sent by Dr. Smit, Dr. Facko and Dr. Brownlow. The discussion emphasized the magnitude of enrollment-driven cost pressures and the limits of state aid, which the presentation characterized as covering about three-quarters of inflationary cost increases.
Committee members said the focus groups will inform options for balancing programs, reserves and possible future revenue measures; no vote on a specific budget change or referendum occurred at the meeting.
