Court acknowledges sheriff's asset inventory after staff flag missing destruction verification for body armor

County purchasing and auditor staff presented an asset inventory for the sheriff's department covering fiscal year 2025-2026 and identified a set of items listed as destroyed or disposed of for which formal destruction verification paperwork could not be located. Among those were roughly 21 items labeled body armor and two software items from 2006.
"One of the biggest issues here is that the bad practice that was used before, where items were just disposed of, without any kind of documentation," the sheriff told the court, adding the department has changed practices and now maintains a stronger paper trail for destroyed items. Staff said they continue to search records and, if necessary, the sheriff's office may provide an affidavit or other validation to document prior destruction.
Commissioners pressed staff on the disposal process and verification and asked them to obtain written proof from disposal vendors or to secure affidavits as necessary. The court acknowledged the inventory and directed staff to continue reconciling documentation.
