Town reports small PFAS findings at Well 3 and says moratorium could be lifted if usage stays low

Town Manager Rob Gaiotti summarized a Jan. 14 Department of (DFD) hearing on Well 3 and reported PFAS testing last year showed "small amounts, under the MCL limit," which does not require treatment but prompted discussion of installing treatment if the well becomes a full water source.
Gaiotti said the State reported general water usage has been lower than in past years and that "there is a chance that if the usage stays consistent through June 2026, the State will lift the moratorium." He noted the local moratorium dates to 1984 and the State moratorium to 2017.
DFD hearing attendees advocated for adding the well and treating it to provide 100% redundancy for the system. Town staff said treatment is being considered should the well be needed as a full source.
Why it matters: PFAS findings below the maximum contaminant level do not legally require treatment, but the town is weighing redundancy and treatment options as a precaution, and an end to the moratorium could change long-term water planning.
