Cameron County to notify South Padre Island that convention center expansion may proceed, with tree-protection condition

The Cameron County Commissioners Court authorized the county judge to provide written notice to the city of South Padre Island regarding proposed improvements and expansion of the South Padre Island Convention Center, on the condition that all existing plant and tree growth on the southern end of the facility be preserved.
County staff presented three expansion options (A, B and C) and a cost/funding overview the city submitted. Staff said the city has roughly $26 million from hotel occupancy and local funds and about $17 million in convention-center revenue funds, for roughly $43 million available against the project cost; the city would fund financing and development. The presentation noted possible regional benefits including attracting larger conferences and sports tournaments, and estimated modest increases in lodging-tax revenue at 10–20% growth scenarios.
Commissioner Garza moved, and the court approved, a motion to authorize the county judge to issue the notice, subject to legal review and conformity with the existing lease. Commissioners also insisted the project preserve existing natural vegetation—citing migrating-bird habitat and the importance of Oak Circle plant growth—and directed staff to ensure lease and environmental protections are enforced during negotiation of any agreements.
