District 23 outlines ESY services and bilingual summer reading partnership; ESY to serve about 40 IEP students

Prospect Heights School District 23’s administration presented its summer programming update May 14, including plans for Extended School Year (ESY) services, targeted tutoring under a school-improvement grant, and bilingual summer reading events.
Student Services leaders said ESY will operate in person at Betsy Ross Elementary School from June 9 through July 2 for students who qualify via Individualized Education Programs; administration estimated approximately 40 students would be served and about 30 staff (special education teachers, support staff and related service providers) would be needed. Separate targeted summer tutoring (a Sullivan-targeted improvement initiative) will serve an invited group of approximately 35 students identified for Tier 3 or special-education support; grant funds will cover staff salaries and transportation for that program. The district will partner with the Prospect Heights Public Library to run bilingual Summer Reading in the Park at John Muir Park (Mondays and Wednesdays, June 8–July 29, 1:00–2:00 p.m.).
Administration emphasized that ESY hiring was largely completed with district staff and that contracting outside services was not expected this year. The packet included memos describing schedules, staffing needs, and professional-development opportunities for staff over the summer.
