Juvenile services seeks $30,000 increase as detention population spikes to 18

Trentis, representing juvenile services, told the court the department is asking for two increases: raising the detention line from $500,000 to $530,000 and adding $25,000 for mental-health examinations. "Currently this morning, we have 18 kids in detention, and that's the highest we've been since I've been here," Trentis said, and attributed much of the recent intake to gun violence and serious offenses.
He said neighboring counties (Gregg, Grayson and others) have helped by accepting some juveniles under contract but that guaranteed beds are becoming less reliable. Trentis described progress toward the GB Center design and said the county will next work on operations, staffing and policy; he flagged the need to decide when to hire an administrator for the new facility or continue interim coverage using existing staff.
