Kaufman County honors Historical Commission; volunteers report locating ‘lost’ cemeteries

The Kaufman County Commissioners Court presented the Kaufman County Historical Commission with the 2025 Distinguished Service Award and invited commission volunteers forward for recognition.
Pam, speaking for the commission, told the court the group had logged more than 1,000 hours of volunteer service over the past year on marker projects, cemetery identification and preservation, and educational outreach. "The Kaufman County Historical Commission did receive the distinguished service award for 2025," Pam said.
Dottie, a commission volunteer who works on cemetery designations, described efforts to find and document small, often-overgrown burial sites across the county. "I work on the historical designations for the cemeteries," Dottie said, and recounted finding Noble Cemetery in Kemp, identifying veterans’ graves and securing a state-level designation and cleanup.
Commissioners applauded the volunteers’ work, and the court posed for a photo with the award. The court’s recognition underscores local preservation efforts; the volunteers asked property buyers and developers to consult the Texas Historical Commission atlas and GPS records maintained by the county to avoid inadvertent disturbance of grave sites.
