County proclaims June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month after DFPS presentation

The Kaufman County Commissioners Court on May 26 approved a proclamation designating June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month after a presentation from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS).
Stedler, a DFPS representative, told the court that 267 investigations were completed in Kaufman County last year and noted that many reports do not meet APS criteria. "We had 2 67 completed investigations done last year in Kaufman County," Stedler said, explaining that the program serves people 65 and older and certain substantially disabled adults. Stedler added that abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of seniors are underreported and often carried out by people known to the victims, including adult children.
The representative described local staffing — three APS specialists in Kaufman County — and said regional workers can be brought in when caseloads rise. She also cautioned seniors to ignore scam texts and phone calls; court members agreed to post guidance on the county website to increase awareness. The proclamation was moved, seconded and carried by voice vote.
