Committee approves bill requiring TennCare biannual report on psychotropic prescriptions

House Bill 2389, sponsored by Chairman Martin, was amended and advanced out of the TennCare Subcommittee. The sponsor said the bill will require TennCare to produce a biannual report detailing the amount of psychotropic medications prescribed across Tennessee and argued the data will be more accessible to legislators and the public than current records produced through open-records requests. "It's been estimated that we spend over $480,000,000 in Tennessee annually on these medications," the sponsor said.
An amendment (No. 013445) was adopted and the committee voted 5–0 to send the bill to the full insurance committee. Committee members thanked the sponsor and noted the measure's intent to bring transparency to prescribing trends and utilization; fiscal and implementation specifics will be reviewed in committee staff analyses ahead of further consideration.
