Lake Ann Elementary reports reading gains but flags benchmark testing concerns

Lake Ann Elementary principal Sharyl Corey told the board the building has seen gains in reading and described staff plans to address concerns about benchmark testing accuracy and student engagement.
Corey said students "at grade level almost doubled since fall," and staff attributed improvements to goal setting, rewards and coaching around test‑taking strategies. However, teachers reported that iReady benchmark tests may not be showing students' full ability; the school plans a student survey to identify which supports were most helpful and will continue refining testing schedules and accommodations.
Corey also noted attendance had dropped about 4% since October and that efforts to contact families had not reversed the trend; the building will track chronic absenteeism and continue intervention protocols.
