Yorktown moves transfer-lottery deadline earlier as enrollment rebounds

The Yorktown Community Schools superintendent told the board the district will move its transfer-lottery deadline earlier to May 8 for the 2627 school year to give families decisions sooner and preserve clearer capacity planning.
"We're moving our lottery date deadline up to May 8," the superintendent (speaker 6) said, explaining the change is intended to provide earlier answers to families and to create a waiting list even for grades where applications are temporarily closed. He said early transfer applications for 2627 are already higher than they were for 2526, and that the district had been down roughly 50 students the prior year.
The superintendent also highlighted an estimated fiscal impact from last year's enrollment decline: "our enrollment fall off last year, probably shorted our revenue somewhere in the neighborhood of 350 to $400,000 over the course of the year," he said. Board members discussed capacity metrics (the district uses about 225 students per grade-level in planning) and the tradeoffs between building capacity and class-size considerations.
Next steps: district staff will publish updated transfer timeline information on the website and communicate the May 8 deadline and waiting-list procedures publicly.
