The Cedar Springs Board of Education unanimously accepted a letter of retirement from Superintendent Scott Smith with an effective date of Dec. 31, 2026. The board approved the retirement acceptance by motion of Bowser, supported by Patin; the minutes record the vote as 7-0 in favor.
At the same meeting the board also approved Scott Smith's 2025-26 end-of-year performance evaluation as "Effective." The evaluation motion was made by Patin and supported by Gilmore and carried 7-0. The evaluation and retirement acceptance were added to the action portion of the agenda after a motion by Board President Reed to include them.
The minutes state that the board held a closed-session evaluation review with Mark Dobias, a consultant from MASB (Michigan Association of School Boards), preceding the vote; the closed session occurred under Open Meetings Act Section 8(a) and concluded at 7:57 p.m. The board did not record additional narrative about the evaluation in the minutes. Superintendent Smith will remain in his role through Dec. 31, 2026, per the retirement acceptance.
