Orchard View principal showcases PBIS and MTSS work; students describe assemblies' impact

Christina Mendoza, principal of Orchard View Elementary, presented the school’s instructional highlight and described a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program that serves approximately 450 students, including an autism spectrum disorder program on campus.
Mendoza said the work began with staff professional learning focused on trauma-informed practices and the connection between behavior and academics. She described classroom "reset spaces" for students to rejoin learning, schoolwide "Hawk assemblies" that teach expectations, and age-appropriate recognition systems such as 'Hawk Tickets' and a raffle. Students who spoke to the board said assemblies helped them learn about pride and respect: "I just love how our whole entire school gathers in the gym room," said one student about the assemblies.
Mendoza credited district support and a grant that enabled the work and said the differentiated PBIS approach supports both early grades and older students. The presentation concluded with the board thanking Orchard View staff and students for the demonstration.
