Board opens 30-day review of K–4 'body safety' curriculum; parents may opt out

Board members heard a curriculum presentation about a K–4 body-safety curriculum the district plans to adopt more formally after a 30-day public review. The presenter said the program is evidence-based and already used in parts of the district and among 18 neighboring districts; the board will vote in September on whether to adopt it districtwide.
The presenter described the curriculum’s four goals—body safety rights, identification of safe adults, safe touch, and when and how to get help from a safe adult—and emphasized compliance with Michigan health standards. "This curriculum has ... been in use already for many, many years in the district," the presenter said, adding that counselors have already delivered elements of the program and families will retain the right to opt out.
