The Jackson County Budget Committee reconvened for the county’s 2027 outside‑agency hearings, a multi‑hour session in which nonprofit leaders made short pitches for grant funding to sustain food pantries, youth programming, mental‑health services and housing supports. Chair Donna Payton opened the meeting by reminding presenters of the compressed schedule and the large applicant pool: “We have had 157 organizations apply,” she said.
Legislators repeatedly urged presenters to keep remarks succinct and said the committee will compile a ranked list of recommendations to be used when the legislature and budget staff finalize allocations for the next fiscal year. Several presenters noted the reimbursement nature of the program and asked for funding to be released earlier in the year to avoid delays in service delivery.
