Polk County DA: office mostly staffed but caseloads are rising

District Attorney Aaron Fountain briefed the Polk County commissioners on staffing, caseload trends and the office's resource needs. He said the office has 25 budgeted positions and "only 1 opening, that is our victim services coordinator," and described staffing that includes eight attorneys, three legal assistants, discovery technicians and child-support staff.
Fountain said referrals across adult felony, misdemeanor and juvenile matters rose from 1,941 in fiscal year 2024-25 to about 2,120 this year, an increase he estimated at roughly 10 percent. He told the board that trials are being scheduled into March and warned that cuts to state funding for supervision have reduced meaningful community supervision capacity, increasing reliance on county-funded incarceration and public-safety resources.
