Board approves baseball field lease, greenlights Summer League lighting after resident requests more notice

The New Buffalo Area Schools Board of Education approved a facility use and lease agreement for the district baseball field and authorized installation of Summer League lighting during its April 27 meeting.

Nora Howe, a Camp Buffalo resident, asked the board to keep nearby residents informed about plans for the new baseball field and the summer league schedule. "She emphasized the importance of including nearby residents of the process," the minutes say. After public comment, the Superintendent recommended approval of the lease; the board's roll call recorded six yes votes and one abstention. Vosberg, Haskins, Summers, Thun, Churchill and Werner voted in favor; Stephen Donnelly abstained. The motion carried (6 yes – 1 abstention).

The board also approved a separate proposal allowing the Summer League to install and pay for lighting at the field based on a Musco proposal quoted in the agenda at $400,000.00; the motion was moved and seconded and carried by voice vote. Kevin Ebbeson, a parent and coach, told the board the Summer League agreement would "benefit both the school and the community," noting opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience and for local fundraising and economic activity.

Board members said they heard residents' concerns and that project communications would be shared through district channels. The actions follow public comment emphasizing the need for clearer notice to neighbors and coordination with the City of New Buffalo on additional recreational amenities, which a resident suggested could include a community pool. The lease and the lighting approval are recorded in the board minutes and will proceed under the terms presented to the board.
