Council hires GC4 for 10-week public-works safety audit after fatal incident

The Longview City Council voted July 30 to hire GC4 Security Consultants to perform a 10-week safety audit of the Public Works division. The contract award followed council concern about a recent workplace fatality and a desire to ensure city procedures and certifications are complete.
The council'requested scope includes review of SOPs and required certifications, evaluation of training and documentation, and interviews with employees involved in relevant incidents. One council member urged that previous and current employees be interviewed where possible; GC4 and city staff agreed to request participation. The firm will provide weekly updates to council per a request that the city include periodic reporting in the final agreement.
"They're looking at all the documentation, certifications required, SOPs, manuals, and that will all be brought back into their findings," a GC4 representative said in response to council questions. Council members acknowledged the cost concern but framed the audit as necessary to avoid future tragedies and to provide an independent look that internal supervisors might not provide.
A motion to approve the contract passed with no recorded opposition. The council also asked about software and data retention for the audit; staff said they would provide information on the cost of continuing any vendor data tools after a six'month trial.
