Board hears staffing update; new sports performance coach teaches after‑school sections

Superintendent Scholl opened a staffing update and turned the presentation over to Cindy Flynn, who told trustees the district recently posted and filled a sports‑performance teaching position.
"She's teaching two sections of sports performance at the end of the day at MHS," Flynn said, describing the hire as a pre‑teacher on a full‑year teaching permit who also works with students before, during and after athletic practices. Flynn told the board she believes a grant secured by Hessen helped fund the role. Tom, who the board identified in discussion as the sports performance coach, confirmed the role is distinct from the athletic trainer the district contracts through ATI.
Flynn said the sports‑performance role focuses on strength and nutrition work across grades 7–12 rather than injury response. "Our trainer with ATI is more about when a student gets a concussion or there's an injury that she's addressing...This person would not address that," Scholl added. The district also gave the coach a flexible schedule to provide access to students past the end of the school day.
Board members asked about hiring pathways for pre‑teachers and whether the classes are open to all students. Flynn said the district hires pre‑teachers who are working toward certification and that the courses are intended to broaden participation beyond athletics. No formal board action was taken; staff will provide the board with the position posting and the candidate resume in board briefs.
