Planning commission approves 19‑foot deck setback variance for Munstocks

The Crow Wing County Planning Commission approved a variance April 17 to let Brian and Christy Munstock site a deck 19 feet from the bluff where the ordinance requires a 30‑foot setback. Chair Rebecca Bess opened the public hearing and staff read the application for the property in Deerwood Township (Parcel 59090512).

Staff told the commission the dwelling was shifted on the lot so the main structure meets bluff setbacks and that engineer Martin Joyce confirmed there is room for a five‑bedroom mound septic system. Applicant Brian Munstock told the board he and his wife are the property owners and that the only outstanding request is the 19‑foot setback to the deck.

Commission discussion focused on the single variance request for the deck. Commissioners amended the findings of fact to note the proposed 4,294‑square‑foot dwelling, the lot’s topography and that the chosen building location would have the least impact on the bluff. Commissioner John O’Shea moved approval “given the certificate, site review and the findings of fact as amended,” and a motion to approve was seconded and carried.

Before the vote, the board confirmed the applicants understood the approval is final and that any future changes to size, height or location would require a new application and permit from Land Services. Staff also reminded the Munstocks to obtain required land‑services permits before construction begins.

The commission’s approval was recorded at the meeting with the motion carried and the applicants thanked the board.
