The presenter described the steps as: (1) a home language survey families fill out at enrollment; (2) a short English check when a language other than English is listed; (3) review by a trained Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (ELPAC); and (4) a written letter to families explaining eligibility and supports in the family's preferred language. "It's a clear 4 step process," the presenter said.
The presenter added a timing detail parents should note: they may change answers on the home language survey within two weeks of submitting them, but only before the student takes the English check. Once that assessment is administered, the survey responses "stay exactly as they are," the presenter said. Families were told they will receive a letter in their preferred language within a few weeks explaining whether the child qualifies and what supports will be provided.
