Finance Director Dan Romzek told the St. Johns Public Schools Board at its April 27 workshop that the district faces a multi‑year budget shortfall driven by declining enrollment and rising costs. He said the district will need roughly $700,000 in spending cuts in 2026–27 and almost $2.9 million the following year to maintain financial stability, and he identified nearly $8 million in longer‑term needs for curriculum, technology, facilities and transportation.
Board members discussed the projections and the need to prioritize spending across all departments. Romzek presented those figures as part of the district's budget outlook and warned that even a proposed small increase in state funding would not keep pace with expenses. The shortfall underpins the Board's subsequent recommendation to explore a voter bond in November.
