Board forms ad hoc committees; schedules sex-ed and cell-phone items for follow-up

The St. Charles Board named membership and set follow-up steps for several ad hoc committees at its Jan. 21 meeting, directing committee reports and next actions be returned at subsequent meetings.
The minutes list committee membership: cell-phone policy (James McPhail, Joseph McNaughton, Mike Goschka); sex-ed policy (Joseph McNaughton, Kevin Ritenburg, Marcia Kendall); eligibility (Mike Goschka, Joseph McNaughton, Marcia Kendall); and bond planning (Angie Lewis, Allison Brady, Kevin Ritenburg). The sex-ed policy ad hoc provided updated information and Joe McNaughton was tasked to finalize a draft and send it to Superintendent Ronald Stanley for review by Thrun Law Firm; McNaughton requested the item be added as an action item on the Feb. 18 agenda.
On the cell-phone policy, the Board reviewed how students, staff and families were notified of an upcoming Jan. 26, 2026 effective date. The minutes note that MS/HS Principal Tom White met with grades 7–12 on Jan. 22 to clarify the policy change and answer student questions. The Board also asked the superintendent to take action with staff to add a protein item to daily breakfast in a separate nutrition discussion.
Board members agreed that ad hoc committees should report at each meeting on dates met, compiled data, goals, purposes and any items to add to future agendas.
