Board moves forward on elementary ELA curriculum aligned to Michigan Act 146

"There is 90% teacher support in SPSD for replacing EL Education, and recommended adopting Amplify CKLA based on task‑force scoring and teacher feedback," Mrs. Connors said during the presentation. She explained that Act 146 lists instructional practices that are prohibited—such as prompting guesses from illustrations or relying on predictable text for initial word recognition—and emphasized that curricula must provide explicit instruction and structured literacy aligned with the science of reading.
The ELA curriculum item appeared on the consent agenda for approval and was listed among the items passed in the consent package. Board members heard the presentation as background to a planned vote; no additional fiscal allocations were announced during the action meeting. The district will proceed with the notification and materials steps required by policy before classroom implementation.
