Jenny Winter, the district's director of curriculum and instruction, presented a set of instructional and policy items at the Committee of the Whole on May 11. SMS/OHHS Spanish teacher Joshua Bilodeau presented curriculum recommendations for the middle and high school Spanish programs; the board expects a recommendation for formal approval at the regular June meeting.
Winter also summarized the sex-education curriculum map and associated lesson materials. After two public hearings, the sex-education materials are anticipated to be presented for board approval in June. Superintendent Gail Hughey also presented several administrative items for renewal or update: a proposed extension of the Ogemaw County Sheriff School Resource Officer MOU (current MOU ends June 2026), COOR ISD memoranda for an elementary Whole Child Specialist/social worker (Kassidy Quigley) and an Early Literacy Coach (Denise Hodges), renewal of the district's critical-incident management agreement, and a review of SETSEG liability insurance limits with direction to obtain quotes up to $15 million.
The board received a list of NEOLA policy additions, revisions and rescissions (including a new PO7540.09 Artificial Intelligence policy, updates to volunteer policies and a replacement for wireless communication device policy PO5136) and discussed a consultant review of bus routes. No final policy adoptions or contract renewals were voted at this committee meeting; staff will bring specific action items to a future regular meeting.
