Acting Windsor County Sheriff outlines department recovery, says most towns renewed contracts

Acting Windsor County Sheriff Claude Weyant briefed the Selectboard July 14 on the department's status, saying he took over leadership in January 2026 and worked to address financial shortfalls. Weyant said the department restructured budget and operations to cover health insurance, retirement, and vehicle payments and maintenance, and that the department is now in better financial shape.
Weyant said that all towns that had been contracting with the Windsor County Sheriff's Department have re-signed their contracts for FY2026–2027 except Weathersfield, which plans to establish its own police department, and Reading, which plans to contract with Weathersfield. Weyant said he and two other candidates are running for Windsor County Sheriff and that he is coordinating fair security with town contacts; he confirmed Tunbridge will continue to receive monthly reports.
Chair Gary Mullen thanked Weyant for the briefing and asked the Selectboard to contact the department if they need additional services or support.
