Board adopts policy adding New Mexico State Seal of Bilingualism & Biliteracy pathways

The board approved the second and final reading of a policy to implement the New Mexico State Seal of Bilingualism & Biliteracy in district high schools.
Associate Superintendent Mario Vigil summarized four pathways for students to earn the seal: tribal-certification MOUs for Native languages; earning four credits in a language other than English plus advanced assessment or portfolio options; and combinations of advanced assessment and portfolio demonstration. "There are 4 different pathways or pathways to achieve the seal or to attain the seal rather," Vigil said during the presentation.
Board members urged outreach to underclassmen so students could plan course sequences early. Vigil said administration had already briefed tribal education directors and high school staff and that each tribal MOU would return to the board for approval as a distinct agreement to reflect local expectations and certification criteria for language proficiency.
