Committee clarifies school-choice status and grandfathering for children of staff
Summary
Members reviewed a prior 2023 change that removed an automatic nonresident-staff-children policy while grandfathering existing families; concerns centered on whether elimination of school choice later would force previously admitted staff children to leave and how to codify protections in policy.

Committee members revisited an earlier change that removed the district's policy automatically admitting children of nonresident staff while grandfathering families employed as of March 24, 2023. Members sought clarity about what would happen should the district later withdraw from school choice: would students already accepted under school choice lose eligibility? Freddie said the new model language granting continuance for admitted students generally would cover many situations but asked the committee to confirm language for staff-specific grandfathering.
Members asked the consultant to research minutes and the 03/23/2023 vote to make the grandfathering language explicit in redlined policy. One participant said, "I don't think that's the intent" when asked whether students would be forced out if school choice were eliminated, and the committee asked staff to identify a clear line to protect admitted students and clarify future hiring implications.
