Pojoaque Valley unveils student-driven "Portrait of a Graduate" after HB 171 changes

Superintendent Dr. Segura told the board that after passage of HB 171 the district identified two district-specific graduation credits (language other than English and financial literacy) and developed a student-centered Portrait of a Graduate that sets expectations for the qualities students should demonstrate. "HB 171 was passed... It eliminated the requirement of algebra 2, but allowed districts to identify 2 credits that were unique to their districts," Dr. Segura said, describing how the portrait grew out of student surveys and small-group meetings.
Consultants who helped facilitate the process described broad student input (several dozen to nearly 88 student responses) and emphasized the importance of reflecting local culture and making materials readable and usable in classrooms and communications. Board members supported measuring the portrait over time and integrating indicators into curriculum, but several requested clarity on how the district will operationalize assessment and whether the indicators will be tracked through annual surveys.
