Engineer says Hawthorne paving and 2026 road program moving forward; construction runoff flagged

Engineer Joe Byrne told the council that the paving schedule for Hawthorne Avenue and Westervelt is set for the first week in August and that the borough is processing contractor invoices for prior projects. The 2026 road program and local-aid projects were out to bid with openings scheduled for Aug. 6 and awards expected Aug. 12; the office will coordinate work to minimize impacts on nearby Washington School.
Byrne also flagged a construction site near Warburton Avenue and Gothel/Goffel Road where mud and runoff have reached the roadway during recent storms. The mayor said he instructed the building department and the borough engineer to contact the Hudson-Essex-Passaic Soil Conservation District and the state DEP to pursue mitigation. Council members asked staff to follow up and explore enforcement options, including notices of violation if site controls are not corrected.
