Council approves defensive-tactics training, instructor workshop and training equipment for Taylor Police

The Taylor City Council on May 5 approved three items related to police training and equipment.
Council approved a sole-source purchase of self-defense training mats from Dall Dallmore Sports Surface not to exceed $7,239, funded through CPE funds. The council also approved a contract with Black Professional Inc. to deliver a Gen-5 defensive-tactics instructor workshop up to $3,200 from the police training fund. "This training is... to provide professional training to our in-department trainers," a councilmember said, describing the approach as a "train-the-trainer" model so a small group can return and train the full force.
Council also approved a Granicus Global LLC contract not to exceed $9,000 from training funds for additional train-the-trainer instruction. During the discussion, the Police Chief and council members said the programs allow the department to improve internal training capacity without sending large numbers of officers off-site. "They allow a few people to go and come back and spread it to the rest of the police force," one councilmember said. The motions carried as recorded.
Procurement and funding notes: the mats were identified as a sole-source purchase; the training contracts are funded through existing CPE training funds and departmental training budgets; council indicated these expenditures are within the approved budget and are not net budget increases.
