During the open-comment portion of the April 7 meeting, a resident asked Taylor City Council to take a formal vote on the police department's 287(g) agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying the city is approaching the one-year anniversary of the police chief's signing and that no council action has occurred.
The resident said the city remains "the only municipality within the state of Michigan" still signed to the agreement and called the lack of a council vote "impure apathy." Another resident, who identified himself and gave his address, asked the police chief how many immigrants had been turned over to ICE in the last 90 days; the answer reported in the meeting was "2."
Speakers asked council members to either vote to approve or disapprove the agreement or at least clarify its status. The council did not take immediate additional action on the floor during the same meeting; the comment was recorded in the minutes for follow-up.
