Taylor City Council unanimously adopted a resolution on April 7 opposing a package of Michigan House bills (55-29 through 55-32 and 55-81 through 55-85) that, the resolution states, would curtail local municipal zoning authority and change rules for minimum housing sizes, parking, and mobile homes.
A councilmember read the resolution into the record and told colleagues the bills would add new studies and plan-review steps that could slow the city's established development-review process. The resolution asserts that Michigan's zoning enabling act delegates municipal zoning to local governments and that the bills would conflict with local authority.
Mayor Woolley strongly supported the resolution and framed it as a defense of local control: "stay out of our backyard," he said, adding that the city has "a phenomenal planning board" and did not want Lansing to dictate local land-use decisions. The resolution calls for copies to be distributed to state legislators who represent Taylor.
