Taylor council approves $38,340 for constitutional policing training

The council voted to approve payment to the Michigan Law Enforcement Training Association LLC for continuing professional education (CPE) constitutional-policing training for Taylor police officers in an amount not to exceed $38,340, funded through the city’s CPE training fund.
Police Chief Blair described the course to councilmembers as a continuation of efforts to professionalize policing — "it's not like professional policing, but it's constitutional policing," he said — and said the instructor has 25 years of experience advising police departments and teaching statewide. Chief Blair told council the course would provide officers 16 hours toward the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) 24-hour continuing-education requirement and would cover use of force, de-escalation, and search-and-seizure topics.
Councilmembers voiced support for the training as part of ongoing officer development. The motion to pay the vendor was moved and supported; council approved the expenditure and praised the department’s work.
