County touts GFOA recognition and finalizes fireworks plans ahead of July 3 celebration

Interim County Administrator David Harrison told the board the county received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting, citing county staff’s work to prepare the annual comprehensive financial report after delays in 2024 related to a new ERP rollout.
Staff then briefed the board on the July 3 "Star and Stripe" fireworks celebration. Event coordinator Daryl Rollins said organizers expect attendance similar to last year and outlined logistics: "We have 11 food, trucks and food preparers," cooling stations and multiple musical acts; Rollins said Parks & Rec and Emergency Management will provide water stations and the sheriff’s office will assist with distribution of refreshments. He also said state police and neighboring Southampton County will help with traffic management and an emergency operations plan is in place.
Board members asked about water and egress; Rollins confirmed water stations and said planning accounted for a single driveway in/out at the park. No new county funding or policy decisions were made at the meeting; the briefing was informational and staff will execute the event plan.
