Commission adds short, focused 2025 state legislative agenda; debate over district-lines vs. infrastructure

The commission voted to send a concise 2025 state legislative agenda forward that highlights four priorities tied to county charter responsibilities: capital support for Regional One Health’s trauma center, education funding that addresses unfunded federal preschool mandates and deferred maintenance, clarity on the Shelby–Fayette county line, and continued state support for the Safe Community public-safety plan.

Chair (speaker 4) introduced the add-on resolution sponsored by Commissioner Brandon Morrison and described the four items. "So it's a very succinct agenda," the chair said, then opened for questions. Commissioner Erica Sugarman urged replacing or amending the district-lines item to emphasize streets and infrastructure funding for West Tennessee, calling current road funding allocations "deplorable" and asking the Board to consider an amendment that better reflects local infrastructure needs.

Commissioner David Bradford recommended the committee send the resolution down without a recommendation to allow additional district input and potential wording changes Monday. Chair agreed to accept an amendment Monday and to keep the agenda as concise as possible. The committee moved the resolution forward for full commission consideration.
