Township manager flags HDFA millage renewal and developer, intersection and ordinance updates

In his Jan. 13 manager’s report, Township Manager Mike Luce provided several updates with potential implications for local planning and finance.
Luce said the township received written notice from MI Homes that the builder is withdrawing from the Sawyer Ridge development; the property owner intends to continue the project with a new builder. Luce also reported the Planning Commission will review a requested ordinance amendment to allow shipping containers for storage on a limited basis.
Luce said staff met with the Livingston County Road Commission (LCRC) to discuss possible improvements at the M‑59/Old US‑23 intersection; LCRC indicated improvements could proceed if the township and developers were willing to contribute toward the project. Luce added that MDOT has no plans west of US‑23 on M‑59 before 2030, except a planned roundabout at Latson Road.
On fire funding, Luce said the current HDFA operating millage funds service through the end of 2026 and recommended hiring a municipal financial advisor to develop a funding plan and assess whether a millage rate increase should be placed on the fall ballot to address rising costs, capital needs and potential station improvements.
Manager Luce also reported coordination with the HERO Center and other teen centers and said a request for a new water softener will be considered in the next budget cycle.
