Residents criticize council over budget cuts and limits on public comment at Purcellville meeting

Several speakers criticized reductions to utility rates that, they said, were effectively subsidized from general funds and had consequences for town services. Business owner Casey Chapman thanked the council for a water-bill change that he said reduced his costs; other residents objected that those savings shifted burdens to taxpayers.
The public commenters' complaints dovetailed with a larger debate on the evening's agenda: the towns support for the Virginia Main Street program and the recent decision to defund the towns economic development manager position. Speakers asked the council to be transparent and to restore avenues for meaningful public participation in policy decisions.
