Commission hears details of new downtown parklet under White Palace

Planning staff and EDAC are creating a removable-furniture parklet beneath the White Palace to add seating and planters on the town right-of-way; purchases were made at Nichols Hardware and Southern States and installation is imminent.
Director Wilkes told commissioners that EDAC has allocated special project funds to create a small parklet under the White Palace building on Main Street. The director said the project will include planters, additional picnic tables and benches and that all furniture is removable; "we were really trying to create... a really nice place to hang out on Main Street," Wilkes said.
Wilkes noted the sidewalk is town right-of-way, which allows the temporary installation, and added that the White Palace is soon to be for sale so purchased furniture can be relocated elsewhere along 21st Street if necessary. Purchases were made from Nichols Hardware and Southern States, and staff expected installation to be finished by the coming weekend.
