Director Wilkes reported that the town's FY26 budget freezes 2.6 planning staff positions and reallocates part of economic development support to the town manager's office. "In the new budget, there are 2.6 planning staff positions that have now been frozen," Wilkes said, and he named planner-manager Boyd Lawrence's role and the zoning permit officer position as affected. Wilkes also noted the zoning permit officer, Brian Roden, will remain with the town until his planned retirement in late August.
Wilkes added that the FY26 budget includes a $40,000 line to hire a zoning administrator as a consultant. The director described that allocation as in flux and said the shape of any consultant contract remains to be determined. Commissioners were advised to expect staffing constraints as the department reorganizes economic development functions under the town manager's office.
