Mahnomen council moves forward with ordinance to ban parking in front of mailboxes

The Mahnomen City Council on June 15 approved moving forward with Ordinance 2026-3, which would add a subsection to Chapter 71 addressing parking directly in front of official mailboxes.
City Administrator Taylor Guenther told the council the proposed language is typical for cities and would help enforcement when a vehicle impedes mail delivery. “This helps on the enforcement side in the instance someone complains that a vehicle is parked in front of their mailbox and impeding on the mail carrier's ability to deliver mail,” the meeting record states. The ordinance text defines an official mailbox and would prohibit parking directly in front of the box or within eight feet during delivery hours, with limited exemptions for owners and emergency vehicles.
Council voted to post the draft ordinance on the city website for the required 10-day public notice and bring it back for final approval at a subsequent meeting. The motion to proceed with the posting passed without objection.
