"We really want to make sure we're meeting our high demand job needs in the area...we're not just counting what we call butts in seats; we're really focused on students that are coming, completing, and going out into the workforce," the lawmaker said, explaining that this is a three-year effort that will produce reports and refinements in years two and three.
The lawmaker said the reallocation includes reviewing plans and performance at institutions and emphasized that funding cuts should not undermine efforts to expand high-demand programs. Council members asked how reallocations and potential budget cuts would affect local institutions and city services; the lawmaker urged engagement with higher-education committees and continued local–state dialogue.
