Council reviews employee-focused priorities in strategic plan update

Council received a staff update on the strategic plan's employee-priorities section at the Nov. 18 meeting. Summer (speaker 9) told the council the plan includes four ongoing areas: improve employee satisfaction, leadership development and training, workplace safety, and recruitment and retention.
Summer said staff view many of those items as continuous efforts rather than one-off projects:"even though we may... say you know... 1 of the things is to do benchmarking and analysis, we've done that... this is something that's built into our policy we're going to continue to do every year," she said. Staff highlighted recent steps including tier-2 legislative support for public safety recruitment and a pilot 4/10 schedule in public works, plus active open-enrollment education about salary and benefits.
Council members asked few substantive questions on the employee section and thanked staff for ongoing efforts; staff said department-year-end reports and a community-survey data set will be available to inform the council's January retreat discussions.
