Summer, the city's HR/benefits lead, recommended increasing the city's basic life-insurance benefit from $25,000 to $50,000 after a benchmarking review of about 60 cities. She told the council the comparable median was near $50,000 and that only three of the benchmarked cities paid the same or less than South Ogden currently does.
Summer said the cost to increase life coverage for employees' spouses and children would be about $4,500 annually for the full population; for the remainder of this fiscal year the city would prorate that cost. Council members indicated support and asked staff to proceed with the change and, if needed, handle the budget amendment in a subsequent packet. "If I have the head nods today, I'll go ahead and make that adjustment," Summer said; council members signaled assent.
